Gary DeWaal, senior counsel in Katten's Financial Markets and Funds practice, has been appointed by Colorado Governor Jared Polis to the state's Securities Board. The Securities Board works with the Colorado Securities Commissioner to assist her in performing her duties, including those related to the creation of rules, issuance of orders, formulation of policies, setting of fees and other issues affecting securities regulation in Colorado.

The five-member Securities Board includes two attorneys licensed by the Colorado Supreme Court that also are conversant in securities law; one certified public accountant; and two members of the public at large. Gary will serve a three-year term in one of the public-at-large seats.

Gary is formerly the chair of Katten's Financial Markets and Regulatory practice, where he is considered a leader in both the derivatives and cryptocurrency regulatory spaces. He has deep experience, rooted in his prior employment as Group General Counsel of the world's largest exchange-traded derivatives broker and, before that, as a senior trial attorney with the Division of Enforcement at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Earlier this year, he was inducted in the Futures Industry Association Hall of Fame.
